The Centre is contemplating the expansion of the Patna Metro Rail network up to the revered Sikh shrine Sri Takht Harmandir Patna Sahib Gurudwara, announced Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday (December 26).
This development comes in response to a request made during a function at the Gurudwara, attended by several BJP leaders, including Ravi Shankar Prasad. The Gurudwara, situated at the birthplace of the 10th Sikh Guru, attracts pilgrims from across the globe, particularly during significant events like ‘Veer Baal Diwas’, which is being observed in memory of the martyrdom of two sons of Guru Gobind Singh. The Patna Sahib Gurudwara holds historical significance as the birthplace of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
“As of now, we are in receipt of a written request for linking the Gurudwara with Patna Metro, from Prasad. We will undertake a survey to study the feasibility,” Puri said.
He, however, added that “a headway can be made only after we receive a formal proposal for expansion of the project by the Bihar government. Metro rail projects are a collaboration between the Centre and the states concerned”.
While the minister affirmed the Centre’s openness to the idea, he emphasised that the formal proposal and collaboration with the Bihar government are essential to advance the project.
Sikhs from various parts of the country and overseas undertake pilgrimages to the Gurudwara, particularly during the celebration of ‘Prakash Parv,’ which marks the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. Hardeep Singh Puri, the sole Sikh member in the Narendra Modi cabinet, engaged in prayer at the Gurudwara, interacted with Sikh community members, and paid a visit to Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar before departing on his return flight.
“An emotional journey at Takhat Sri Harmandir Ji, Patna Sahib on #VeerBaalDiwas. The resonance of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji’s respect for Sikh Guru Sahib Ji echoes in the impactful initiatives for our community. Today, I witnessed the enduring spirit of unity and progress,” Puri wrote on X.
