IITs lead in Data Science education, IIM Calcutta tops in masters category, says Imarticus Report 2023

The top three positions in the Bachelor of Data Science degree category among 100 colleges across India were secured by IITs, with IIT Hyderabad leading the way, closely followed by IIT Delhi. Notably, IIT Guwahati emerged as the third-best educational institute for the Bachelor’s Data Science programmme, according to the Data Science Education Report 2023 by Imarticus Learning, an ed-tech platform.

The report emphasises the dynamic nature of the Data Science sector, highlighting its status as a highly sought-after educational stream in the country. It underscores the promising opportunities offered by Big Data and Analytics courses in the IT sector, where the demand for skilled technocrats in this field significantly exceeds other IT employment opportunities.

The report underscores the regional variations in the distribution of educational institutes offering Master’s in Data Science programmes, providing insights into the geographical concentration of such institutions across India.

In the realm of Executive programmes in Data Science, the distribution is delineated as follows: 21% in the South Zone, 44% in the West Zone, 12% in the East Zone, 18% in the North Zone, and 6% in the Central Zone. Noteworthy institutions offering these executive programmes include ISB Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad in the South, along with NMIMS Global Access School for Continuing Education, which boasts a pan-India presence and employs a multifaceted approach.

The forecast for India’s data science education market indicates a remarkable rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 57.52%, escalating from $204.23 million in 2023 to a substantial $1.391 billion by 2028. The job market for big data and analytics is anticipated to witness substantial growth, increasing from 215,000 positions in 2023 to over 338,000 by 2028. Major industry players such as Amazon, AWS, Bain and Company, Deloitte, Ernst and Young and Google are anticipated to be key recruiters, offering competitive yearly remuneration packages ranging from Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 35.1 lakh, according to the report.

Similarly, on a global scale, the data science education market is projected to reach $378.7 billion by 2030, reflecting a 25% surge in demand for data scientists across diverse industries including healthcare, banking and retail. The report additionally delves into trends in artificial intelligence (AI), government initiatives in AI education, and the establishment of three National AI Institutes in Bengaluru, Delhi and Pune.
