The Delhi Directorate of Education announced its intention to deploy rehabilitation para-professionals in the seven special schools it recently assumed control of, in accordance with the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act 2016 and National Education Policy 2020. This decision stems from deliberations held in June during a meeting of the academic committee tasked with devising a transition plan for students from the seven special schools. The discussions encompassed various critical issues such as admissions, facilities, curriculum and other deficiencies observed in these schools, according to an official statement.

During the committee’s session on Tuesday, unanimous agreement was reached to enlist rehabilitation paraprofessionals in all special schools. Their responsibilities include assessing children with disabilities, providing counselling for students, parents and teachers to facilitate a smooth transition, deploying vocational instructors, supplying teaching learning materials and assistive technology, ensuring regular staff training and organising parental counselling camps, the statement mentioned.

The schools now under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Directorate of Education include the Government Nursery Primary School for Deaf and the School for Mentally Retarded Children in Mayur Vihar, the Senior Secondary School for Blind Boys in Kingsway Camp, and the Middle School For The Deaf in Rohini Sector 4, among others, it added.
